What the heck is a Petanque?

Petanque also known as "the game of lunatics" (or Boulle) was introduced to the French in 1366 by aliens travelling in a starship not dissimilar to the one pictured to the right. The game is very similar to lawn bowls, the main differences being the boulles are made of metal and are hurled at the jack rather than being rolled gently across the pitch. The paticipant must yell "PETANQUE!" at the top of his lungs on completion of his turn.

Petanque Attire

Novices are required to wear handkerchiefs knotted in all corners on their heads.
Grand masters (players who have made it to the second game) wear pith helmets and brightly colored safari suits.

Petanque Ettiquette

Never attack or jostle a petanque player during matchplay. Remember that boulles are made of metal and these guys have got to be more than a little nuts to be playing this game in the first place.

The Star Ship Petanque
Happy onlookers at the Napalme Petanque Invitational 1935. The game has never been far away from controversy. The Napalme Petanque Invitational 1935 is a prime example. On the third day of the final play had to be abandoned when a melee broke out in the crowd over stolen croissants. The game was completed two days later when Patrice Debris defeated Renee Mousse in the 76th set, the scoreline 47-45.

A Brief History of Petanque.

1366: Aliens teach the French Petanque as an act of charity after observing them devour snails and frogslegs.
1423: The Marquis De Sade attacks Callais using nothing but boulles as weapons. He fails utterly and decides S & M is more his bag.
1732: Sir Isaac Newton discovers gravity after being struck on the scone at a petanque competition.
1911: Albert Einstein declares "God does not play dice with the universe, He just plays petanque with it on Tuesday afternoons."
1947: President De Gaulle declares Petanque "The National Game of France" in an attempt to lift his people's spirits after their poor performances in recent World Wars.
